Netflix Picks Up John David Washington Thriller Born to Be Murdered (Exclusive) – Hollywood Reporter

Alicia Vikander and Vicky Krieps are also in the thriller that was produced by Luca Guadagnino.

Netflix has picked up Born to Be Murdered, a thriller starring Tenet headliner John David Washington and produced by Luca Guadagnino.

No release date was given but the streamer is penciling in a debut in 2021.

Alicia Vikander, Vicky Krieps and Boyd Holbrook are also on the roll call of the movie that shot in Greece in 2019 and marks the English-language directorial debut of Ferdinando Cito Filomarino, who was the second unit helmer on Guadagnino’s movies such as Call Me By Your Name and Suspiria.

Written by Kevin Rice, Murdered is set in Athens and the Epirus region of Greece and tells of a vacationing couple, played by Washington and Vikander, who fall prey to a violent conspiracy with tragic consequences.

Guadagnino produced with Marco Morabito and their Frenesy Film. Also producing are Francesco Melzi d’Eril and Gabriele Moratti for MeMo.  Rodrigo Teixeira exec produced for RT Features.

Endeavor Content repped the film and the filmmakers in the deal.

The pick up keeps Netflix in the Washington business and bets on the continued rise of his star. The company in September paid upwards of a reported $30 million to acquire Malcolm & Marie, a black-and-white romantic drama that stars Washington and Zendaya.

Washington, who broke out with Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and earned a Golden Globe nomination in the process, is currently working with top directors, coming off of starring in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and recently nabbing a role in David O. Russell’s latest film project.
